The GE washing machine has to have completed its last washer cycle and currently be idle to enter Test Mode.
If the wash cycle was interrupted and cannot complete normally, manually drain the washer to reset the water level switch before trying to initiate Test Mode. Do not attempt to exit Test Mode by disconnecting the power to the washer. Disconnecting power while in Test Mode will lock the washer. General Electric GE washers generate error codes when malfunctions are detected by the machine's on-board circuitry. These error codes can be used to troubleshoot washer operation and can help pinpoint failed components.
GE washers will save the last 10 error codes to be used for service diagnostics. You can retrieve these codes by accessing the machine's Test Mode. Test Mode is initiated by pressing a sequence of buttons on the washer's control panel. Press the "Power" button on your GE washer. Any current cycles on the control panel will be cleared. The control panel display must be blank to proceed. Plug the power cord back in to the GE washer.
Within 30 seconds of restoring power to the washing machine, press the "Signal" button, press the "Delay Start" button, press the "Signal" button, the press "Delay Start" button again. The washer door will lock, and the control panel will display "t01" when it has successfully entered Test Mode. Press "Delay Start" to advance to "t02". The control panel will display the most recent error code.

Gas Dryer - White. Electric Dryer - White. Loudest machine I have ever heard! And the sound is not just a typical washing machine sound. It constantly sounds like the engine is laboring to do anything! We hear the engine trying to work when it is refilling for the rinse cycle even. It has the basic functions, but heaven forbid you wish to add an item once the cycle has started. And forget about adding fabric softener if you didn't do it at the start What a waste of money and a waste of water, as some clothes do not even get wet!
And don't even get me started about the "customer service" with Sears on getting this item exchanged. Needless to say, we are returning this item and taking our business elsewhere! Washer works great so far and I love the large drum, you can put a ton of clothes or towels in the washer and they come out fresh and clean as they should. It is a LOUD washer!

From what I have read, this is totally normal. The noise doesn't bother me, but if you live in a townhouse or apartment, the noise can be heard through the wall, so buyer beware! Other than that, the washer is great and works as described. The old one I had to run the spin cycle twice to get clothes dry enough to run in the dryer. The new one gets clothes dry enough on the first spin. I had an HE machine and I couldn't take it anymore!
I didn't like how much water and the inability to change the settings. Yes agitator and all! Best thing I have done in a while. I prefer HE washers but purchased this unit for my mother, who needed a machine easy to operate, and one that she wants to select the water level for and use any detergent she pleases.
So for her this was perfect! The most common cause of when a washing machine jumps and bangs on spin is an uneven load. However, regular or severe banging on the sides should be a cause for concern and can cause expensive damage to your washing machine if ignored.
A general rocking around of a washing machine on spin may just be caused by an uneven floor, or an un-level washing machine. Observe when the banging occurs. It may have an intermittent fault that really needs an engineer to diagnose. If it jumps around and bangs as soon as the motor starts then the washing machine may have lost control of the motor.

Some faults can cause the motor to only spin and lose all the slow wash rotation speeds. Check this article to see what a tacho coil is. If a newly installed washing machine is jumping and banging on spin, make sure the transit packaging has been removed. Transit packaging holds the suspension solid. The washing machine will move about and shake.
See the instruction manual for instructions on how to remove the transit packaging. Overloading is not good, but surprisingly, under-loading is more likely to cause out of balance loads. Likewise badly mixed items of laundry can cause an unbalanced drum.
Before a proper spin the drum should revolve slowly for a couple of minutes. If a load is out of balance you can often observe the inner drum lurching from side to side. At this stage you may see large flashes of metal drum on each revolution. If this happens the drum will be out of balance. It may refuse to spin, or if allowed to spin the drum could thump around and hit the sides of the casing.
See the best way to load a washing machine drum. This is unfortunately a difficult fault to diagnose. It could be various things including a faulty connection somewhere on the motor or pcb, especially if intermittent. It can be caused by a part overheating, cutting out and then cutting back in causing loss of control. Or it could even be something like a faulty shock absorber. If this fault isn't caused by the loading you really need to get an experienced engineer to look at it.

Predicted Reliability. Speed Queen. Source: Consumer Reports' and Fall Surveys. Owner Satisfaction. Is there a better feeling in the world than thinking you're on the hook for a major appliance repair, only to discover there is an easy, do-it-yourself fix? Heading to your laundry room to transfer a load to the dryer and finding the washer stuck on the spin cycle would have most people seeing huge costs and dirty clothes in their foreseeable future.
If you have a washing machine stuck in a cycle, take a deep breath and try resetting the washer first before you make a panicked call to your local repair person. For GE washing machines, both Hydrowave and other models, the reset procedure is pretty straightforward, and just might be the easy, DIY fix you need. The source of your washing machine woes and the method for resetting will vary depending on your model of washer. For example, GE Hydrowave washer problems stem from issues with the motor, generally.
Washing machines that use the Hydrowave system do not have a transmission, so the motor plays a more key component in these models. The motor may need to be reset if there is a power spike, a load that is unbalanced or a disruption in power.
For other models of GE washing machines, a pause in a cycle will cause the electronic controls to lock up. Whatever the model, if your machine is stuck in a cycle, try to reset the GE washer first. To reset washing machines that use the GE Hydrowave system, start by unplugging the washer for one minute. Plug the washing machine back in and then within 30 seconds, quickly open and close the lid six times.
You'll need to do this within a second period. Raise the lid at least 2 inches and make sure it closes each time. This should complete the motor reset. To test that it is successful, run a cycle without laundry. If the washer fills and begins to run normally, you can put laundry in and complete the cycle. If the washer does not start to run normally or if you have the same problem within a few loads, you will need to call in a professional.
For other GE washing machine models, you will also start by unplugging or shut off power to the washer for 30 seconds. Next, turn the timer knob around once and into any setting other than final spin. Ensure the water is on and turn the power back on, which should solve the issue.
If you are still having issues, you'll need to have the machine serviced. Sally Brooks is a writer living in Atlanta with her chunky toddler and patient husband. Hunker may earn compensation through affiliate links in this story. Sally Brooks. Connect on LinkedIn. Show Comments.
